Sumario:Loneliness is a complex phenomenon that has gained increasing importance both socially and academically in recent years. This new and growing social reality presents challenges at various levels (health, employment, legal, administrative, etc.) and constitutes a significant challenge for administration. Highquality social relationships stand out as a strategy to reduce loneliness and social isolation, forming part of the WHO’s proposals for promoting active and healthy aging. To address this challenge, it is necessary to understand what loneliness is, its impact on health, the typical characteristics of those who experience it, and the possibilities for intervention. The purpose of this work is to review and summarize recent scientific literature on these issues, with a special focus on the Spanish context
