Sumario:Reading comprehension is important in the development of critical, creative, and reflective thinking. An adequate level favors the construction of significant learning. This study aims to determine the reading comprehension level of the students of the computer technical high school of the Margarita Cortés Fiscal Educational Unit, in Esmeraldas, Ecuador. The research is quantitative and cross-sectional with a descriptive approach. The sample consisted of 115 students from the three years of study. The instrument applied was the Tapia and Silva Reading Comprehension Test (1982), designed to measure literal, inferential and critical comprehension. The results indicate a low level of critical understanding, and medium in literal and inferential. Some indicators should be concerned to improve the situation. From these data, it is concluded that the students’ reading comprehension is at a medium level.
