| Sumario: | The aim of this paper is to describe [V2-reve] secondary predicates in Mbya in syntactic and semantic terms. According to the data collected, the postposition reve, which is generally used in the languages of the Tupi-Guarani family to express relationships of company and association, has extended its contexts of use in Mbya as a marker for depictive secondary predications when attached to a verbal stem. Previous analysis of secondary predication and specifically of this construction in the languages of the family are scarce (cfr. Dooley 2013; Dietrich 2009). This paper provides evidence to analyze [V2-reve] in Mbya as a depictive construction (Schultze-Berndt and Himmelmann 2004; Himmelmann and Schultze-Berndt 2005) based on the fact that these reduced forms cannot be the only predicate of a sentence and they express a state of affairs that takes place during the temporal reference of the event expressed by the main predicate, mainly encoding meanings oriented to an event participant. |
