Resumo:Here is how, more than once, one is taken to lie, just like geographical maps”. This how the artist Hercule Florence, who was part of the Langsdorff expedition from 1825 to 1829, expressed himself regarding some localities he visited in the hinterland of Brazil that were marked as cities on the map of South America by Arrowsmith, published in 1810. This paper is aimed at comprehending the values that led the traveler to disqualify these places, through an analysis of the reasons and parameters that influenced his perception.
