| Sumario: | Objectives: To evaluate the hospital mortality rate of very low birth weight neonates of the Neonatal Service of a tertiary public maternity hospital in Fortaleza. Methods: Retrospective cohort study based on secondary data, including all live newborns weighing less than 1,500g born at Maternidade Escola Assis Chateaubriand in Fortaleza from 01/01/18 to 30/06/18. The newborns were followed from birth to discharge or hospital death. Survival curves were obtained using the Kaplan Meier method comparing newborns across 250 grams of weight. Results: 80 patients were analyzed. 53.7% had a birth weight lower than 1000g and these were responsible for 82.0% of the deaths studied. The hospital mortality rate was 487.5 per 1000 live births with birth weight less than 1500g. The neonatal mortality coefficient was 412.5/1000 while the post-neonatal mortality rate was 75/1000. The rate of early neonatal mortality was 287.5/1000 and the late neonatal mortality rate was 125/1000. Survival of the studied neonates was of 51.3%. Conclusion: The results show a high mortality rate, confirming the need for constant efforts to improve care for very low birth weight infants. |
