Sumario:The objective of educational programs is to improve buccal health. The earlier they are carried through, the greater their benefits. The family plays an important role in the success of this practice, since children, at very early age, are totally dependent on family habits. The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge mothers of children 0 to 4 years old, inhabitants of the rural area in Araraquara city (SP), had about prevention measures in caring for their children’s buccal health after attending an educational program. During seven years, 38 mother were assisted. Afterwards, individually, they answered a questionnaire on buccal hygiene. It was observed that 80% of the mothers carried through the buccal hygiene of their children, while 11% only supervised. Water humidified cloth diaper or gauze was the most used means (59%) of hygiene, due to the fact that at the beginning of the program 58% of the children didn’t have their first deciduous tooth erupted. The toothbrush was mentioned by 20% of the remaining 21% of the mothers above mentioned, who started brushing only after the deciduous tooth eruption. The conclusion is that educational odontological programs present satisfactory results when applied for a long period and that the professional must play an educational role by standing out to parents the importance of prevention.
