Sumario:Body gesture is an essential part of a musical performance. It is practically impossible to imagine musicians playing without any gestures that help them communicate with each other and with the audience. This dissertation presents a literature review on body gestures in flute performance. Through a proposal for categorization of these gestures, we direct our attention to the auxiliary gesture used to signal the beginning of a musical phrase, thus creating the category of initial auxiliary gesture. We carried out three experiments to observe possible tendencies in the execution of these gestures by flutists. In the first experiment we had as participants two flutists, PhD students flutists at the Federal University of Minas Gerais School of Music (UFMG), the second a PhD student from UFMG and a flute professor from Escola Vale Música in the State of Espírito Santo, and the third was done with audiovisual recordings of five renowned flutists available on the YouTube platform. The results of these experiments point to auxiliary gestures related to the act of breathing before the onset of the first note and tendencies in vertical and horizontal movements (of the flute and parts of the musician's body). As a practical application of the discussions about these experiments, a practical proposal was developed with activities and reflections on awareness of flutists' auxiliary gestures at the beginning of musical phrases.
