Resumo:This work has covered several issues, seeking to reveal the process of construction of the city of Rio de Janeiro as a tourist destination. Since the first images of the city, produced by travelers and diffused in Europe - considering the complex processes of mass production image involving several professionals who often worked the distance - until the first published guidelines for foreign travelers. Facts are evident: in the 19th century, the economic possibilities of a city to be built, after the installation of the Portuguese court, attracting immigrant entrepreneurs and adventurers. In the 20th century, urban modernization, towards international opinion. The construction of national identity through the music, dance and entertainment industry. The identification of Rio to the stereotypes that were granted. The perpetuation of the city's icons.
