| Resumo: | This paper presents an analysis of the civil libel involving the Portuguese artist Manoel Rabelo de Souza and his apprentice João Battista de Figueiredo. I intend, with this publication, to promote a reflection about the teaching, the learning and the work relations which surround the 18th century quadraturistic practice in Minas Gerais and in the North of Portugal, region of origin of the master painter implicated in the litigation. In order to execute this study, I confronted the data collected from the judicial process with contemporaneous documents and academic and literary works which approach the subject. During the investigation, I verified that the decorative campaigns of the temples of Minas Gerais were executed by a team, a workshop led by expert workers and composed by apprentices, relatives, slaves and officials admitted for the execution of countless artistic enterprises. |
