| Sumario: | This paper reports on teaching and extension experiences at the Research Institute of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden (JBRJ), relating them to the context of research activities that are performed there. The Botanical Garden is a bicentennial institution that has seen substantial expansion over the last twenty years. Botanical gardens worldwide are recognized by the scientific community and society as important institutions for the conservation of plants and the encouragement of greater environmental awareness in society. Throughout its history, the Botanical Garden has played a prominent role in the training of scientists in the fields of botany and biodiversity conservation. Extension activities, such as the professional training of young people and workshops and courses offered to society, have also been a focus of the institution for many years. Creation of the National School of Tropical Botany (ENBT), in 2001, led to the formalization of teaching and extension activities, and a new dimension in the context of the institution, integrating research with the goal of biodiversity conservation. |
