Description
Summary:This paper aims to analyze a certain reappearance of the humanist topos of the “New World” in contemporary Latin American literature, focusing on the dystopic O paraíso é bem bacana by André Sant’anna (2006) and the utopian El amor es más que una novela de 500 páginas by Washington Cucurto (2006). In these books it is Latin American immigration in Europe, more specifically Berlin, which generates the sort Edenic imagery traditionally spurred by the Americas in humanists. I explore the representation of Utopia beyond a post-colonial framework using Mario Bellatin’s fiction.
